SAFETY

Safeguarding the lives of transport workers.

Thousands of transport workers are killed at work every year. Millions more are forced to work in environments where negligence, harassment, coercion, violence and even the most basic needs - like safe access to sanitation - result in preventable injuries and illnesses. Disregard for safety standards at work continue to put the lives, health and wellbeing of transport workers at risk.

OUR POSITION

Protecting workers’ lives, preventing injuries and demanding safe workplaces has always been at the heart of the union movement - and always will. At the ITF, protecting the lives and livelihoods of workers, and ensuring that workers have a seat at the table in setting occupational standards for safety and health in the workplace, is our number one priority.

HOW DO WE SAFEGUARD THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF ALL WORKERS?
VALUING WORKERS' LIVES, HEALTH AND WELLBEING

We're demanding that companies and governments value and actively support the lives, health and wellbeing of all workers. This includes providing access to occupational health services for those working in contracting chains and in precarious non-standard forms of employment.

85% of people want their government to improve health and safety laws to protect transport workers.
CREATING SAFE AND DECENT WORKPLACE CONDITIONS

A safe workplace is a fundamental right, which is why we are advocating for international standards that protect workers’ health and safety in global policy forums.

We're demanding the protection of workers through elected union representatives, and supporting affiliates to organise and campaign at local and national levels.

ITF Sanitation Charter

Safe access to decent sanitary facilities, sanitation systems, and most importantly the ability to use them when needed, is truly a global issue that is widely and deeply felt by all transport workers
An injury to one, is an injury to all.
ENDING VIOLENCE AND HARASSMENT

Safe workplaces must be free from violence, harassment and coercion. We're campaigning for the ratification of ILO Convention 190 on violence and harassment and for the introduction of mechanisms that hold employers accountable for eliminating violence and harassment in their workplaces.

87% of people want their government to protect transport workers from violence and harassment.
